"We are happy to provide a very positive testimonial based on
our experiences with Kinematik. We are currently well into the process of
implementing eNovator at our two research sites.
At both sites, a wide range of different kinds of scientists
will use eNovator as their sole laboratory notebook tool (we will no longer use
paper notebooks at all) while managers will use the project management features
of eNovator to follow progress, schedule work, track resources etc.
General opinion from all users has been very positive so far
- we have found the Kinematik people great to work with and very amenable to
suggestions - it helps that many of the Kinematik people we have dealt with
have a scientific background so they can understand what the various groups of
scientists are saying about their work and how they would like to integrate it
with eNovator. We have run this project as a "user-driven" project -
the prospective users of the system have made the major decisions about
functionality, customization and integration from the start, hence they
provided their own list of perceived benefits during the project - there are
many benefits and I have listed a few below.
One of the main benefits is the time saving for the
scientists - they already produce all their reports etc. in electronic form but
the current paper notebook regime requires these reports to be printed out and
glued into a notebook. These and other mundane daily tasks will now disappear.
For both biology and chemistry, text entered into the ELN will be fully
searchable. On the chemistry side, the chemical structures will also be
searchable. Searching of structures and text is just not possible with a paper
notebook - if we need to look for a very old experiment (e.g. for patent
purposes) in a paper lab. notebook then we often have to rely on the memory of
the scientists to locate where the original experiment is recorded...if the
scientist who performed the experiment has left then that information may be
lost - the ELN will protect our IP by making sure that (henceforth)
experimental details are searchable and retrievable in a timely fashion. A
further IP protection is that the data is stored in a database and is backed up
- paper lab notebooks are susceptible to fire, flood etc. Information stored in
the ELN will be accessible remotely, either while the users are traveling or
are working from home. In addition, ELN data at remote sites will also be
available - you don't have to be in the same place as a paper notebook to see
the data!
Experimental information
required for patent production will be much more
easily accessible - currently experimental detail,
compound property data etc. needs to be
laboriously retyped from the paper lab notebooks
during patent preparation - this is a very tedious
task prone to error."
